London Meet-Up January 2009

Posted by Sziphix Jan. 18, 2009 @ 8:46 PM EST

So I've come back from my second meet-up, and again I've had a great time!

One thing that was different from last time was the sheer amount of people that turned up; it seemed like we had swarmed the Namco station, I got there a bit late and expected to have to search for the group, but I didn't have to at all. It was great to see some (AsthmaHamster :( ) of the people who I'd met previously again, and to meet a lot of new people too. Highlights of the Namco station include deckheadtottie and I ramming Tom up the rear (Dodgems, of course!), everyone watching Luis and Mike play a game of DDR, and me getting owned at Tekken 6 by someone playing as Mokujin.

Then of course, there was the tramp,
who without warning, approached the Newgrounds camp.
All the drinks he had must have made him woozy,
as he wanted a fight with EyeLovePoozy.

After leaving Namco, a lot of us got split up, so we walked about in a group with Bob (sorry for calling you Rob!), deckhead (driving dodgems sucks for us tall folks, huh?), tigerkitty (good that you stayed out for longer this time!), The-Swain (You're a really cool guy, I didn't know it was you that made the Blockhead flashes, I love your stuff!), BananaBreadMuffin (Woo, Physics!), there were others in this group too, but we were at Walkabout before I could talk to you. :(

The group had reduced in size by a lot by the time we all got in the bar, probably because people in a day trip had to get home, people under 18 couldn't get in, and because Dangan's tattoos don't count as I.D (unlucky). Most people had something to eat/drink, and I spent most of the time talking and eating.

After everyone had their food and drinks, we began to leave for the pub, and I took a cab along with The-EXP, morbid-giggle (thanks for paying, I owe both of you a drink.), and Dim (we all like Metal Gear Solid wayyy too much!). All of us bundled into a bus to get the rest of the way there.

The pub had lots of comfy sofas, karaoke and even free wifi, and the atmosphere was amazing; everyone was chilled out, and there was no awkwardness in approaching people and talking to them (at least not for me). Bezman (Took me quite a while to realise it was you in Namco, you are now the hairiest person I know. :) ) and EviLDoG (I didn't notice you when we were in Namco, must have done a good job staying away from the drink. :p) trying to hit the high notes on Stayin' Alive had me in hysterics, and Cally and Gagsy singing Waterloo gave my ears a chance to recover.

Leaving the pub at 02:00, we all returned to the apartment for some Rock Band and winding down and I had a very interesting conversation (though I didn't have much to add :( ) with Hans, Tom and his friend out on the balcony.

Soon after, it was time for me to leave; I could have opted to stay at the apartment when places first became available, but I'm sure there was a lot of people that had travelled a greater distance than I did, and though it would be better if someone else got the place. It was a pretty boring trip from Tower Hamlets to London Bridge to get my nightbus, but the experience of the whole day is one of the most memorable experiences of my life so far. If you're on the fence about meeting people from the internet, at least give it a go; the people that turned up (from this site at least,) are terrific to hang out with.

Big thanks to Luis for once again organising such an enjoyable event.

Now, I present, Chips with Dips: 2 times the fun!

Was it you who I grabbed a phone from and took a few pictures of with Tom in that last Karaoke type bar? If so, it was nice to meet you and hope at least one of the pictures turned out ok. If not, glad to read that you enjoyed yourself.

Jan. 19, 2009 | 10:56 AM Sziphix responds:

Yeah, that's me!

Thanks for the pictures, they were a bit grainy, but that's because of the camera, not your photo taking skills, most people that use the camera on my phone just totally ignore the fact there's a focus function, but the ones you took look fine.
It was good to meet you too though, would like to see you at another meet sometime.

Glad you had a good meet. I went to the 3rd one, I believe we spoke - but not the last one because I couldn't. Did you say you did art for a game or something?

Jan. 21, 2009 | 2:40 PM Sziphix responds:

Nah, that's not me, I haven't done anything artistic yet. I believe I was the only Black person at August 2008 meet. Hope to see you at another meet though.

It's a pity we didn't get a proper talk this time (D:) but still, great to see you. The reason you didn't see eViLdOg at NAMCO was because he wasn't there (I think he was at work), he turned up in Walkabout and I'm not sure he even made it to the other pub, he looked like death walking. I remember people just thrusting pints of water at him at Walkabout.

Anyway, amazing meet, glad we all got together again for our big orgy of internets, cant wait till next time. Next time I'm going to have to set myself a challenge to talk to more people, I know on saturday most of the people I was chatting to were the people I was chatting to on friday, so I kinda shot myself in the socializing foot there.

Jan. 25, 2009 | 5:35 PM Sziphix responds:

Yeah, we didn't talk much this time; I wanted to chat with everyone, so that didn't leave me with much time to talk to each person. Next time I should be down before the main meet-up day, when it's not as hectic and we can talk more. :)

I remember beign a spectator while you were on Tekken. Was that the guy witht the ponytail? And is Mokujin the wooden guy? I think we tlaked briefly after that while walking downstairs.

Was a good meet. Next time I'd like to speak to more people though. I need to be more foward (not too much...) and just get chatting.

Look foward to seeing you at the next one.

Yeah him, just sitting there at the arcade machine waiting for a challenger, ahaha. kairyublack managed to win against him though, but I lost all rounds because I'd forgotten all my character's moves and I still haven't gotten used to an arcade stick.
